Post-surgery update 1-4-23
The surgery was not what we hoped for.
Our Plan A was to have the liver surgeon resect the liver and put in a Hepatic Arterial Infusion Pump and for the colorectal surgeon to resect the colon.
Part of Plan A, or any plan, is to explore the abdominal cavity to look for any other disease that didn't appear on the scans. If they found any evidence of disease (cancer) outside the liver and colon, the liver surgeon would not perform any part of his surgery.
Unfortunately, they found a small tumor on his abdominal wall. The news hit me hard.
I had a few hours to pull myself together before they took me back to see him. I had to muster all the peace, calmness, and strength I had left and hold it together when the doctor told him.
When his colorectal surgeon told him about the surgery, he was still a bit out of it. I am so happy she told him because I don't know if I could have done it without crying.
Zach absorbed some of the info but asked me more questions as I held his hand. He would dose off, open his eyes, tell me, "I love you so much " and then drift off again. He was disappointed about the liver, but the assurance that the liver surgery isn't off the table gave him peace.
They let me stay longer than they usually let anyone stay, and I am so thankful. I left the hospital at 11 when he was discharged to a regular room.
The liver surgeon assured me that liver surgery isn't off the table, but Zach should start chemo as soon as he is strong and healthy from surgery.
